It is made-up of the 36 top performing clubs in Cheshire. Sitting proudly at the apex of the Cheshire pyramid it is organised on the basis of three divisions of 12 - Premier, Division 1 and Division 2. Additionally there are another 30 odd Associate clubs that participate in the extensive Sunday 3rd XI competitions and the long established, midweek, O/40s tournament. Under separate management is a huge county-wide junior network of competitions. The CCCL was formed in 1975 when eleven clubs from the Manchester Association and one from the Lancashire & Cheshire league bravely took the plunge and joined the new set up. There were further intakes in 1981 (two clubs), 1993 (10), 1996 (2) and a significant expansion in 1998 when another 11 clubs became members. Over the years there have been a number of new joiners and a few leavers but since the pre-millennium expansion the structure based on 36 clubs has remained the preferred optimum. Below the is the Cheshire Cricket League and then the Cheshire Cricket Alliance. Promotion and relegation operates amicably between all the divisions in the three competitions.
